Penmon Point Lighthouse by Photosbykev Penmon Point Lighthouse by Photosbykev
Penmon Point Lighthouse on Anglesey, build in the 1830's the light house is now solar powered and is accompanied by a fog bell weighing 173kg which tolls every 30 seconds ... a very haunting mellow tone. Behind the lighthouse is Puffin island, which used to have a resident flock of puffins that nested there but they have been gone a long time.

Taken at 03:30 this morning about 90 minutes before sunrise.

The nights are getting very short the sun only set 6 hours before sunrise so it was pretty much light all night.

stunning colours in the sky. if you don't mind my asking - did you pull an all nighter to capture such images, or did you sleep earlier and get up in the middle of the night?

I love the colours and deep contrast of the under exposed image but I'm finding the composition and little awkward. I think the lighthouse needs to be on the right hand side not the left. At the moment, it's leading into the shore, where I think it would be stronger if it was pointing out to sea.

Thank you for the critique they make me rethink about my work all the time. Personally I prefer it as the eye scans along the shore left to right and then the rocks lead out to the lighthouse plus that is how it is :) but I fully understand your reasoning

I have been wanting to try these early morning shots like this and I was wondering if you would mind a few questions. This picture is amazing so I feel you could definitely be a good authority to ask, lol. 90 minutes before sunrise, could you even see light with the naked eye? Or did you pick this time because you could just start seeing light? Also, how long of an exposure did you use?

It was remarkably light so yes there was a lot of colour in the sky, no wandering around on the beach with a head torch once you got used to the light levels lol.

When I started shooting the exposures were typically 4-5 minutes @ f16 iso 100 with a 3 stop ND filter.

Let me start by saying that, It's an awesome photo.

Could you illustrate any specific techniques...or instruments like filters or lens that you used to capture this photo?

Canon 7D and 17-40mm lens, 3 stop ND to get the longer exposure to smooth the water and a 2 stop soft grad ND to balance the foreground and sky. It is slightly underexposed by about 1/3-1/2 stop to bring up the colours.
